My main painting media is based on ink and watercolor Chinese brush painting on Xuan Paper (aka rice paper). Chinese watercolor has developed many techniques and styles in its long history while retaining core concepts, and in modern times, innovation continues to propel tradition forward. I have explored a philosophy of freedom in my painting technique to infuse my pieces with passion. I like the challenge of using rice paper to paint. Though requiring good control of brush stokes, these papers diffuse the layers of colors and energy delightfully.

Each aspect of the painting is purposeful yet free. I make use of the natural flowing contrast between rich ink and simple rice paper to allow interpretations of what I wish to express.

It is essential to leave room in the paintings for viewer’s imagination. A whimsical heart will find stories in simplicity.
